arolyn Wing Greenlee

Corralling Your Remembrances: 2:00–3:30 p.m. $30

In an attempt to keep her family’s Chinese American experiences in the historical record, Carolyn Wing Greenlee began interviewing relatives and family members in the early 1990s. That resulted in five memoirs spanning six generations, and led to her helping people with great stories and no experience bring their books to print. She has authored, edited, or collaborated on 45 books, and has just completed a full-length musical about the value of the individual, the blessing of community, and the healing power of hope and love.

Carolyn will show attendees how to find the best form for your remembrances, what to put in, what to leave out, legal considerations, finding your story, releasing your voice, and the pleasure that comes from organizing memories into a meaningful whole.

Michael Carr

How to Hook An Agent: 2:00–3:30 p.m. $30

Michael Carr is a literary agent with Veritas Literary Agency. He has a background in editing and writing, working from a home base in San Francisco. He represents writers in a variety of genres, with a special emphasis on historical fiction, women’s fiction, science fiction and fantasy, memoir, narrative nonfiction, and popular science. Michael works carefully with clients to produce the cleanest, most professional manuscripts and enjoys teaching at workshops and conferences to help develop emerging writers. He speaks Spanish and conversational French and before joining Veritas had professions as diverse as programming simulators for nuclear submarines and owning an inn in Vermont.

Michael will show attendees what agents need from you. Learn what makes an effective query letter and how to write a compelling opening for your sample pages. He will discuss how to write a grabby opening while avoiding the dreaded white room and its evil twin, the cliffhanger.
